What to include with a weekly test build

A preview link needs context: version, changes, review steps, known issues and a feedback path. Make each build support a specific decision.

What to include with a weekly test build

Name the decision this build supports

A weekly build is useful only when reviewers know what to inspect. Name the user flow and the decision needed. Explain visible changes instead of supplying a list of changed source files.

For example: “Changing the query now preserves the selected filters. Please confirm whether that matches your workflow.” This separates a functional check from a product decision.

Prioritize the review and distinguish decisions needed now from optional exploration. Explain the affected areas rather than asking someone to retest the whole product without guidance. Specific questions make the resulting feedback easier to act on.

Provide enough setup to reproduce the review

Include the version, build identifier, tested environment and installation steps. If sharing web and app previews together, explain whether they contain the same changes and identify differences.

Provide role-specific test access through an appropriate channel. State whether records are preloaded, must be created by the reviewer or need a reset. Use review data rather than actual customer information.

A useful instruction lists prerequisites, a starting screen, steps and an expected outcome. Keeping that setup makes it possible to compare next week’s result with this one, even when servers or test data change.

Describe unfinished work and known issues

Separate the review scope, exclusions and known limitations. Otherwise reviewers may report work already tracked or interpret an unfinished feature as an unexpected defect.

For a known problem, describe affected conditions and any current workaround. If there is no committed fix date, record an owner or the next decision point. Mark untested environments as untested.

When sharing automated results, explain what they cover. A test count alone cannot communicate completeness. Connect the available evidence to the items requiring human review so reviewers know where their attention is most useful.

Close the loop in the next build

Collect the build identifier, starting conditions, reproduction steps, expected result and actual result. Screen recordings should avoid exposing personal information. A defined feedback channel keeps decisions from disappearing across conversations.

Classify reports as defects, usability improvements or new requirements, and record their disposition. Assess scope and schedule before committing to new work.

In the next build note, identify resolved feedback and the steps for checking it again. This closes the loop from report to decision, correction and verification, making regular sharing a review process rather than only a progress announcement.
