How many button states does an interface need?
Start with a small set of states and add more only when they communicate a meaningful change.

Start with four states
Default, hover, pressed and disabled cover the basics. Focus remains visible in every state.

Add states only when needed
Use loading for actions that take time and selected for persistent toggles or filters.

Do not rely on color alone
Pair color with a visible shape, label or icon, and check contrast in both themes.
